October November 2017

Ibeyi - I Wanna Be Like You

Devo:  Twin Cuban/French daughters of a guy that was in Buena Vista Social Club. Whole album is solid and this one's a cut above.

Manchester Orchestra - The Gold

Adrien Brody:  Fall is here, bundle up with new-ish tracks from familiar names.

Guts - And The Living Is Easy

Meat MD:  Quick banger for your Thanksgiving holiday to ignore your family to.

Son Little - The Middle

Joe Con:  LCD on Tuesday.  We came, we saw, we danced ourselves clean, we bought two carafes of white wine (possibly a sign concert-going in your mid-30s?), we conquered.

There was a moment toward the end of the show when James Murphy said something to the effect of, "So we're going to play a couple more songs, and then we're going to leave the stage for a minute. It's going to look like the show is over, but we're really just going to take a piss and catch our breath, so don't leave. Then we'll come back and play a few more songs."

I've always kind of hated the idea of encores because bands play them even if the crowd doesn't earn them, so they kind of lose any magic/surprise that they may have once had.

Anyway, Murphy started his career by opining that he was "losing his edge," and now he's cracking dad jokes on stage and brazenly proving that he's completely lost it. I can't figure out whether his self-awareness is to be commended or not.

Zero 7 - Don't Call It Love

Timmy:  I fucking dig that we have a gray-haired, beer-bellied, dad-ish frontman making music that such a broad age range relates to and enjoys.

Also loved watching Pooh, despite trying pretty damn hard to be careful, wreck some chick’s body while returning to the dance zone, full carafe in hand.

September 2017

Grizzly Bear - Wasted Acres

Ding: Grizzly Bear has always been my favorite boy band. Dig the new offering.

DYAN - Looking For Knives

Mike Tyson: If you like the drive soundtrack and don't hate Lana Del ray's voice, my bet is you'll like this track.

Daniel Caesar - Get You (feat. Kali Uchis)

Schmoo: Smoke from top to bottom. Think Frank Ocean (Channel Blonde, if you will) cut with some secular gospel.

Cautious Clay - Cold War

Joey C: If you dig the recent JVM, give this a whirl.

July August 2017

Matt DiMona feat. Lani Renaldo - Malibuu

Mike Tyson: Could be a cool song to fuck another human to. Just tried self sex with it and it was pretty neat.

Preoccupations - Memory

Devo: I heard this song in my office today. It's a long one that goes a few different directions. But at around the 4:00 mark they do about 3 minutes of Cure-like bliss. I just keep going back to that part.

Queens of the Stone Age - The Evil Has Landed

Adrien Brody: They actually got Mark Ronson to produce some of this album.

Nite Swim - Pool Party

Foggy Goggles: Don't know much about this guy, other than two hot sexy upbeat electro rock singles with a really full sound.

tbt Bubba Sparxxx - Ugly

Mr Joshua: Love the end, where Timbaland basically admits using the same drum track on multiple hits. Doesn't give a fuuuuck.

June 2017

The War on Drugs - Holding On

Hollering:  Welcome to summer fellas.

Gucci Mane feat. Offset - Met Gala

Schmoo:  Atlanta boomin.  Migos Gucci and 2Chainz.  Potent as hell.  Trap distilled.  Your veins will pump with all the struggle you never had.

J.I.D - NEVER

Meat MD:  I have this attending who is a 55 year old Taiwanese man who has expressed his dislike of rap in the past.  I'm nearing the end of my residency and have decided to take less and less shit every day.  He has been providing me the most shit, of which I am, as mentioned, not interested in.  So we had a surgery coming up that was going to be a beast.  I always get there first and set up the room.  When I came in, I apologized to the staff for what I was about to do, then put on that new Gucci Mane, on repeat, for 6 hours.  By the time he realized what happened, he was scrubbed in and couldn't do anything about it.  Finesse the Plug, Dr. Chen, finesse the plug.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Fireproof

Michelangelo:  Heady departure from their last few albums.

Living Colour - Cult of Personality (Arsenio 1989)

Tatarsky:  GOAT late nite performance.  We've talked about Sam on Letterman -- I love Sam.  This wins tho.

May 2017

Netherfriends - Uptown Boys

Meat MD: This dude deserves a shout. V prolific and incredible knack for song and album titles. In 2016 he made 13 full albums with titles like 808s and Harpbreak, one called Swish where every single song is just the name of a basketball player, Don't be a Fuck Boy, and my personal favorite Nocomputer with track titles like "My computer was stolen in Atlanta" "All of nocomputer was recorded live using loop pedals" and "Buy nocomputer so I can replace my stolen computer".

The Lagoons - California

Devo: Add to memorial day playlists immediately.

HAIM - Want You Back

Pooh: Retro banger.

Adrien Brody: Rob Lowe in St Elmo's Fire is such a fucking stud. That weird yellow Batman tank he rocks playing the sax would cost A$AP Rocky $2k today.

Astronaut - No Place For Lovers

Meat MD: They remind me of Big Black Delta, who I love. (ignore the video, which obviously sucks).

Allman Brothers Band - Whipping Post (9/23/1970 Fillmore East)

Mobile Mike: There are a few Fillmore albums, all within a few years of each other, that fall into most top ten lists. Hendrix, Santana, Derek and the Dominoes -- and of course the Allmans. Untouchable.

Greggs brother, Duane, is still widely considered the greatest slide guitar player of all time. He used an empty pill bottle, showed the world what it sounded like with Statesboro Blues, and co wrote songs like Layla with Eric Clapton.

Tonight we drink to Gregg and the Allman Bros. RIP.

April 2017

Jacob Banks - Part Time Love

Schmoo:  Been fiending since Kendrick dropped that un-takeable, seminal American blues scripture a couple weeks ago.  Stumbled across Jacob Banks today.

The Palms - Push Off

h/t Mike Tyson

Gorillaz - Let Me Out

Meat MD:  Best since demon days.  Not everyone seems to like it, but everyone's entitled to go fuck themselves.

All The Small Things - Postmodern Jukebox ft. Puddles Pity Party

Tatarsky:  Really feeling these covers, and PPP in general.  Can we get this guy at a wedding please?

March 2017

Run The Jewels - Legend Has It

Joshua:  Yet another dope RTJ video.

Portugal. The Man - Feel It Still

Meat MD: P.TM must have an album on the way. Two fireball tracks already out.

Electric Guest - Oh Devil

Benny: Are people discreetly jamming out to this album without telling me?

Jay Som - Baybee

Whiskey:  Nice, bright guitar-synth shit -- if you enjoy Real Estate or Chairlift, this should hit the spot.  Also for examples of 2017's hot new genre "offspring of Kim Jung Un jamming in a gondola", this is pretty good.

February 2017

Future Islands - Ran

Devo:  Sam is musical genius.

Adrien Brody:  Sam is an A1 beefcake.

Meat MD:  Sam is the sweaty 40 year old at a table with young kids at the club.

THEY. - U-RITE

Meat MD:   These guys finally have a full album.  It.is.gooooood.  They live in that Gambino, Shabazz Palaces, Paak "we do whatever we fucking feel like but it's kind of rap or R&B" world.  They popped up on a Zhu song (working for it) but have a bunch of their own stuff.

Mac DeMarco - My Old Man

Adrien Brody:  Enjoyable. Nearly as much as the YouTube username and image of the individual that posted this track.

Funkadelic - Can You Get To That

Shoobs:  Pat Carney did a DJ set in Nashville last night and it was great.  Here's a song our friend shazam'd.

January 2017

Mondo Cozmo - Shine

Adrien Brody:  I Shazam'd this song in a bar last night. Nothing cool about that, but enjoy.

Nu - MAN O TO

Meat MD:  Lol at dj khaled on line three of sunday coachella lineup.  Kind of have to go see him right?

The Bright Light Social Hour - Sweet Madeline

Tatarsky:  For your drive home, or that first beer of the weekend, or any other reason.

Postmodern Jukebox - Black Hole Sun feat. Haley Reinhart

Mike Tyson:  Turns out even yer mom likes Soundgarden.

St. Albion - Ghosting feat. Max Frost

Devo:  Panorama feels like a shallow attempt of collecting FB data of every 25-40 year old making six figures in NYC.  I mean, it worked.  But still.

December 2016

Holy Wave - She Put A Seed In My Ear

Devo:  This year-end list is the most unique and consistent with my musical taste that I've found.  And she speaks so passionately about the albums that you can't help but want to like them:  The Seeds In My Ears

EL VY - Are These My Jets?

Timbo:  I shared bad wine and Conor Oberst's set with some 45ish-but-childish Kiwi bros at ACL this year. They all went by code names, which ruled -- Hallelujah, School Zone and ...fuck, I forget the last one. Anyway, one of them still texts me random music links and he sent this a few days back.

D.R.A.M. - Cash Machine

Meat MD:  Poor guy got scooped on Cha Cha by fucking Drake of all people, but he's still chugging away making awesome shit.

Nick Colletti - Suh My Fuh Dih Bih

Tatarsky:  Suh my fuh dih bih.

George Michael - I Will Be Your Father Figure

Mike Tyson:  Show me a better five o'clock shadow and I'll show you a liar.
