November 2013

Flume & Chet Faker - Drop the Game

YAMS: Both these guys are fantastic and this collab does not disappoint.

Darkside - Paper Trails

Whiskey: This song creeped me out in the good way. Darkside is Nicholas Jaar and some other guy. The full album is worth diving in.

Caveman - In the City

Hollering: The lead singer's voice is Sting-ish?

Mapei - Don't Wait

Devo:  It's hard to not like this one immediately.

John Grant - GMF

AdrienBrody:  Rough Trade Records in London released their top 10 albums of 2013 list this week.  John Grant's Pale Green Ghosts was number one.

Amason - Went to War

FreyDon:  Catchy as fuck.

October 2013

Majical Cloudz - Childhood's End

Whiskey:  This song makes me feel like I'm driving through the rainy streets of Seattle on my way to get my girlfriend an abortion. IN A GOOD WAY.

Sam Smith - Nirvana

Adrien Brody:  Blue-eyed soul for you and your loved one.

Panama - Always

Devo:   These bands just pick tropical places or relaxing experiences for names and I like them before I hear the music.

London Grammar - Nightcall

Carl:  Her voice is the truth.

Movement - Us

Hollering:  Three observations.  I highly recommend this track if you are a fan of SBTRKT.  The Aussies are really pawning music holes these days.  Is that wonkey-eyed Karl from Workaholics at the 1:50 mark?

September 2013

Portugal. The Man - Purple Yellow Red & Blue (Passion Pit Remix)

Bunker: If this doesn't make your foot tap, you probably haven't had sex in the last 12 months. I've been there.

Phantogram - Celebrating Nothing

Devo: They are really good.

Great Good Fine Ok - You're The One For Me

Adrien Brody: One listen and it feels like this band captures what Passion Pit was always reaching for and missing. In other words, a tolerable lead vocalist.

Jagwar Ma - Come Save Me (Flight Facilities Graceland Remix)

DJ YAMZ: Had to find out what made this a "Graceland Remix". Wait for a minute and a half and all will become clear.

Augustines - Cruel City

Devo: They dropped the "We Are" which is good because that was hard to say.

August 2013

Sting and Robert Downey Jr. - Driven to Tears

Shorty:  So, Downey Jr. can also sing.

Bon Iver - Babys (Urban Contact's Summer Soul Remix)

Joe Con:  This track has single-handedly gotten me through a few awful cases of the Sunday Weirds.

FreyDon:  Repeat for two days now.  Hints of Bisco home again in there...

Thao & The Get Down Stay Down - Live on KEXP

Salisbury:  Nice to hear a banjo and synth keyboard on the same track.

Mean Lady - Lonely

whipptsONwkdayz:  Best jam I've heard in months.

Vennu Mallesh - It's My Life What Ever I Wanna Do

Adrien Brody:  There is so much hotness in this video I physically had to force myself to stop orgasming and start typing.

July 2013

You Ain't Even Know It (U.O.E.N.O. Remix) - Future, Wiz Khalifa, A$AP Rocky, 2 Chainz

Adrien Brody: On repeat. Monday night office work.

Thee Oh Sees - Toe Cutter / Thumb Buster

Tatarsky: Sort of a Bucktown american psycho thing going on.

Wampire - Trains

Hollering:  THE COMPARISON TO ARIEL PINK IS APT, YOU MONSTERS.

Fletcher - Open Arms

Ding:  "Fletcher?!"

Capital Children's Choir - Untrust Us (Crystal Castles cover)

Shorty: Kids these days.

June 2013

Hot Chip - Dark & Stormy

Whiskey:  New Hot Chip. Sounds just like old Hot Chip. Also shares a name with the best summer drank out there.

Duke Dumont - Need U (100%)

Meat, M.D.:  Good song, amazing video.

Joywave - Tongues (ft. Kopps) (RAC Mix)

Adrien Brody:  I think I listened to this track 50+ times this weekend.

The James Hunter Six - One Way Love

TheMonkeysEyebrows:  Here's a catchy one that sounds like it could be off the Animal House soundtrack.

Lil B - Pretty Boy (Soul Train Edit)

Prig:  Lil B probably didn't curate this video himself, but damn it's perfect.

May 2013

Is Tropical - Dancing Anymore

Ding:   NSFW. NSFW.  These French bastards have a new album coming out and the video for "Dancing Anymore" is pretty wild.  In a way I can't explain, it's very us.

Vampire Weekend - Ya Hey

Adrien Brody: I have a confession to make ... I'm impressed with the new Vampire Weekend album.

Junip - Your Life Your Call

Meat, MD: Jose Gonzalez has such a creepy, great voice.

HAERTS - Wings

FreyDon: Add this to the growing list of new kinda Fleetwood Macs... good song though.

Bonus:  12 Years of DFA

Joe: If you like LCD etc, this is worth watching.

EDM

Bros, this looks sick:

I know I have trashed electronic music in the past, but this looks so awesome. So many 90s babies are gonna be there. It is definitely, as the song says, "what it feels like to be alive." This is like that Electric Carnival you guys talk about, only better cuz it is like the "next step" in the music's progression.  EDM will never die.

April 2013

Generationals - You Got Me

Adrien Brody: I just keep hitting repeat on this track and pretending it's warm out.

Kitten - Cut it Out

Tatarsky: I feel like female lead vocals is the new male lead vocals.

MS MR - Hurricane

Ding: Been stalking y'alls MS MR on Spotify (Walla? Kowisk?). Fuckin' dig it. Creepy video bonus!

Capital Cities - Safe and Sound (RAC Remix)

Devo: "Do you guys remember that one song that RAC made worse? Me either."

Janet Jackson - Someone to Call my Lover (Giraffage Remix)

Tatarsky: This is a hot one.

When The Prig talks, people listen

A huge hat tip to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs - even though you haven't written a good song since 2006, you're at least keeping it real. Hope the masses continue to purchase your irrelevant music, and that we can all do our part to stop the idiots stop taping.  Maybe they will actually start listening.

March 2013

A$AP Rocky - Phoenix (Prod By Danger Mouse)

Meat, MD: Danger Mouse's motto should be, not only do you like my work, you like the people I work with.

Gaoler's Daughter - When We Were Young

Hollering: Real easy listen here.

Palma Violets - Last of the Summer Wine

Devo: Prig review, "These twits are like a homeless man's Velvet Underground."

Action Bronson - Morey Boogie Boards

Adrien Brody: Upon repeated listens, this beat is infectious.

Haim - Forever

Kowieski: It sounds like music that would be on the soundtrack to a 2013 Goonies remake starring Jonah Hill as Chunk.

February 2013

A few tracks we enjoyed in February 2013.

Jagwar Ma - The Throw

CARL:  Really digging the ambient 90s vibe in the second half here.

Bahamas - Lost in the Light

Ding:  Cleared out a tiny, totally hetero space in the catalog next to Lamontagne for the likes of this guy.

Autre Ne Veut - Play by Play

Corrigan:  This song works ... trust me.

Ducktails - Letter of Intent

Kowieski:  Most of these tracks have a Real Estate-meets-Destroyer vibe, which makes sense since the band was started by one of the dudes in Real Estate.  This track has a more chilled-out electropop vibe with some nice female vocals, really soothes the soul.

Roadkill Ghost Choir - Beggar's Guild

Hollering:  Think late night lake/float trip anger when you and the other solo brajs are passing a bottle of cheap whiskey and reassuring each other how much you don't give a shit. And then somebody throws a gross of bottle rockets into the fire.

January 2013

A few tracks we enjoyed in January 2013.

Chairlift - Wrong Opinion

Kowieski:  stumbled across this thanks to all the year-end lists.  Sounds like Fleetwood Mac on the Drive soundtrack. I don't know what you call that jangly sound that comes in on the hook but I have not been able to get it out of my head this week.

Blackbird Blackbird - New Leaf

MeatMD:  Dream pop shoe gaze, folktronica, molly music, whatever, makes me bob my head a little.

The Royal Concept - World on Fire

Corrigan:  To the guy who introduced me to The Royal Concept.. thank you.. infectious stuff... sucks they're handsome as shit and have amazing fashion sense.

ON AN ON - The Hunter

Tatarsky:  Nice big sound on this one, and sort of how I imagine Ohio house parties in the 90s.

Sam and the Womp - Bom Bom

TheMonkeysEyebrows:   This Sam and the Womp jam was number one in the UK this summer.  It makes me want to do blow see how high I can roundhouse.
